Date Night!

Last night our chapter roller skated the night away on our bi-annual date night. We met on campus with our wonderful dates and were whisked away on a limo and party bus, shortly after which, we arrived at a roller rink that we had completely to ourselves. It was so much fun spending time with our sisters and dates while showing off our mad skating skills. (Only like 5 people wiped out! Impressive, we know.) The event was also 1980's themed which definitely added to the craziness and fun. There were so many side pony-tails and neon colors that it looked like we were straight out of an 80's workout video! It was so great to enjoy a night full of sisterhood, friendship, and laughter, and we cannot wait for what the rest of the semester has in store.

Last night our chapter went to the Pepperdine men's basketball game to show our support for the team and our school. It was so much fun spending time with our sisters, showing our school spirit, and cheering on the Waves as they battled against the BYU Cougars.

Spring Rush Bid Night!

This past week we hosted rush for a spring of 2012 pledge class. We had a great time getting to know the girls who were rushing and on Thursday we held Bid Night where we welcomed into our chapter seven new sisters! This event was held at our president's apartment and was an evening full of fun and laughter. We are so excited that these lovely ladies are now members of Alpha Phi!

Sisters Back From Abroad

This semester we are so glad to have three of our lovely sisters back with us after spending a semester overseas! Alessandra McDowell, Ashley Rhame, and Paige Sutherland have been reunited with the chapter and we could not be happier. Alessandra spent the fall semester in Lausanne, Switzerland where she loved the experience of new cultures and adventures. One of the best parts of her time overseas was getting to visit Salzburg and see the places where Sound of Music was filmed, since it's a favorite movie of hers!

Ashley's time abroad was spent in Heidelberg, Germany, but she got to travel to many other countries and interact with people from all around the world as well. She spent lots of time with some of her Alpha Phi sisters and loved growing closer to them through these experiences. One of her favorite memories is getting to speak Japanese in Croatia! (who knew?)

Paige was on an entire different continent than our other two sisters, as she spent this past fall in Buenos Aires, Argentina. She loved getting to go to different countries throughout South America and was able to truly immerse herself in the culture. She grew very close to the other Pepperdine students in her program and had a great time getting to know everyone.

Our sisters had a wonderful time experiencing what the world has to offer this past fall, but we are so excited to have them all back with us here in Malibu!

Meet Our New President

We are so excited to now be able to call Bridget Corson the President of the Iota Alpha chapter of Alpha Phi! Bridget is a Business Administration major from Walker, Minnesota and a junior here at Pepperdine. This past summer she attended the Alpha Phi Emerging Leaders Institute at Butler University making her fully qualified for her newly elected position as Lady Superior. Bridget will be leading our sisterhood for the 2012 calendar year, and we cannot wait for what she has in store!

Christmas Mixer!

Last night we had a Christmas mixer with the gentlemen of Psi Upsilon. Wearing festive Christmas sweaters, decorating gingerbread houses, and exchanging white elephant gifts really helped put us in the mood of the holiday season. It was so much fun singing along to our favorite Christmas songs, drinking hot cocoa, and celebrating this time of year with our friends in Psi U!

Delta Tau Delta Dates

Last week DTD had their philanthropy Delta Tau Delta Dates. All week we went on dates with members of other fraternities and sororities, and Thursday was the final event, a speed dating competition. We had so much fun getting to know members of other Greek groups on campus, and cheering on our sisters at the competition. One of them even made the top five! All of the proceeds went to AMEN missionary, an organization that provides education and basic supplies to Burmese migrants.

Yesterday was Sigma Phi Epsilon's philanthropy Sig Ep State. They had a powder puff flag football tournament, root beer pong tournament, and spirit contest for all of the sororities to participate in. Thank you Sig Ep for putting on a fun philanthropy to raise money for Youth Aids!

Last night we had a new member mixer with the newly initiated gentlemen of ATO. We went to Millions of Milkshakes, a celebrity favorite, and ordered everything from the Miley Cyrus milkshake to the Chloe Kardashian. It was a fun, delicious way to meet some of the new members of Alpha Tau Omega, and spend time with our sisters.

JDRF Walk

On Sunday morning we participated in the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation walk at Dodger Stadium. We helped raise awareness for type I diabetes, and money for research to find a cure. It was such a fun and rewarding way to spend a Sunday afternoon and we were even lucky enough to run into some of our Alpha Phi alumni there!

New Member Dinner at Nana's

Last night we had a new member dinner at Nana's (Danica's grandma) house. She made us a delicious Italian meal followed by homemade chocolate chip biscotti. We had so much fun spending time with each other and Nana, who made us miss home a little less with her charismatic charm and home cooking. Thank you Nana and Danica for a fun, delicious evening!

Big/Little Reveal!

Last night we had big/little reveal. All of the new bigs hid inside presents waiting for their littles to arrive and open them. Then, excited littles received a Phi Bear from their bigs. We are so excited to officially have our big and little sisters!

Gamma Games!

On Saturday we competed in Gamma Phi Beta's annual Gamma Games. Gamma Games is a philanthropy that benefits Campfire USA and Camp Laurel. We competed in events ranging from an obstacle course to a three legged race with our wonderful teammates Sig Ep. It was a great way to spend a beautiful day outside with our sisters and the rest of the greek community. Thank you Gamma Phi Beta for hosting such a great philanthropy!

On Sunday we celebrated founders day at Chapman University with our sisters from all around Southern California. We had a ceremony to honor our founders, and got to meet Alpha Phis from other schools to discuss what Alpha Phi means to each of us.

Last weekend we had our fall sisterhood retreat. We had a spa day with our sisters followed by a delicious Italian dinner. It was a great way to spend a Saturday relaxing and bonding with each other!

We finished Sigma Chi's Derby Days strong at the sorority powderpuff competition Friday night. Our sisters advanced to the championship and were victorious earning Alpha Phi the powderpuff first place title. We are so proud of our sisters who represented us, and so happy that Sigma Chi put on such a great closing event to an excellent week of raising money for City of Hope.

We are so excited to help Sigma Chi raise money for their philanthropy! Sigma Chi hosts Derby Days, a week long philanthropy benefiting City Of Hope, an organization dedicated to combating cancer. The week is already off to a great start! Sunday we raised money for City Of Hope with our signatures at chapter, and we had an awesome time watching the Sigma Chi's skits last night at the coach auction. We can't wait for the upcoming events like sorority skit night and powderpuff football! Alpha Phi is so happy to be able to help Sigma Chi with this great cause!

Presents

Last Saturday, during Waves Weekend, we officially presented our new members in the presence of their family and friends. We hosted a family luncheon and loved spending time with our sisters' families while overlooking the ocean, and enjoying a delicious lunch. We were also happy to perform a presents ceremony and show all of the new members' families a little more about our sorority and sisterhood.

Last night we had a mixer with the gentlemen of Sigma Chi at Sky High, a room with trampolines on every wall. We did flips, played dodge ball, and jumped into the HUGE pit of foam. Today was the annual Sig Ep vs. Alpha Phi Food fight. Although the rules stated that only dessert food could be thrown, we were armed with everything from dog food to feta cheese. The most popular items on both sides: maple syrup and raw eggs followed by handfuls of flower. After the fight was over we took a walk to the beach to try to rinse off. Although the winner is still being debated, we had a great time with our sisters and the gentlemen of Sig Ep!

Katie Ordway is our "Sister of the Day!"

Katie is currently our VP of Social and has previously held the position of Director of Social Events. Katie is a Senior Nutritional Science major from Franklin Lakes, New Jersey. This summer, Katie took Pathogenic Microbiology in Idaho with one of her best friends! Katie spent the rest of her summer at home and at her family's house in Cape Cod! In August, she traveled to Paris and Kenya with her family! In Kenya, Katie and her family adopted an orphaned elephant and spent time at multiple local villages. She feels so blessed to have gone on such a trip of a lifetime! Katie has four dogs, loves volunteering, and is obsessed with all kinds of food (Italian and Thai are her favorites!)! Katie says, "I am beyond excited to welcome our beautiful New Members into our sisterhood! We have an amazing year ahead of us!!!" :)

Stephanie is currently our Director of Social Events. She is a Junior Public Relations major from New York. This summer, Stephanie visited Florida and California and then spent the rest of the summer in New York. In New York, Stephanie interned at Calvin Klein in the footwear division, doing brand management and marketing. Stephanie also had fun back home with old friends from high school! For her sophomore year, Stephanie studied and lived abroad in Germany and visited over 30 cities in 13 countries, BUT she has lived in New York her whole life and has never been to the Empire State Building! Stephanie says, "I'm really looking forward to planning fun mixers and social events so the New Members can make friends with the awesome guys in all the fraternities! And more than anything, I look forward to having a Little!" :)

Step Forward Day

Today Alpha Phi participated in step forward day! Our group volunteered for an organization called Project Exodus. Their goal is to empower individuals to end slavery and sex trafficking. We learned that this is a huge issue in the Los Angeles area, so we were happy to help! We walked around neighborhoods of LA distributing information on slavery and talking with residents. We even got some valuable information from some of the people we talked with that Project Exodus will be able to use to help save lives. It was awesome that we could spend time with our sisters while giving back to the community!

Josette Barsano is our "Sister of the Day!"

Josette is a Junior from Scottsdale, AZ. She is studying Art History, Italian, and Pre-Law. Last year Josette studied abroad in the beautiful city of Florence, Italy and spent winter break traveling around the north of India! This summer, she was on the Malibu campus in summer school and worked at the Straus Institute of Dispute Resolution. Some of Josette's favorite things are art museums, ZGallerie, jeans shorts, tazo tea, Betsey Johnson shoes, Crumbs' assortment of cupcakes, friendly smiles, big and bright modern paintings, and all her gorgeous Alpha Phi sisters. :) Josette says, "I'm excited to meet all the New Members and to go to sisterhood events!" :)

This summer Bridget is working full time as a server, interning at a financial services office, and volunteering at a domestic violence agency. She is also going to Europe and Rwanda, Africa later this month! Tori is currently our Director of Philanthropy and was previously our Sunshine Chair. She is a Senior Intercultural Communications major with a minor in film. Tori is from Dallas, Texas. This summer Tori is taking summer school classes. She also had the opportunity to film a documentary about a rock opera tour raising awareness about human trafficking! Tori can speak three languages! Taylor Clayton is our "Sister of the Day!"

Taylor is currently our VP of Programming and was previously our Director of Sisterhood. She is a Senior International Studies and Spanish major from Winthrop, Washington. Taylor is spending most of the summer in Malibu and Calabasas doing research at Pepperdine and working for the Cornucopia Foundation. She will be spending a month in Cuernavaca, Mexico taking a spanish class at an international university. Taylor's high school prom was in a a barn and she's a twin! Taylor is currently our VP of Chapter Operations. She is a Senior Accounting major from El Dorado Hills, CA. This summer Taylor is living in Malibu and working full time as an audit intern at KPMG, an accounting firm in downtown LA. Taylor studied abroad in Switzerland in 2009-2010 and traveled to 10 countries that year! She has lived with Alpha Phis all 4 years of college! Elizabeth is a Sophomore and is studying both Philosophy and Political Science. She is from Boca Raton, FL. Last semester, Liz was our Alpha Phi Sunshine Chair! This summer she is interning at a law firm and learning a lot! Liz loves spending her summers away at the beach! This upcoming year Liz is going to Florence with Pepperdine IP (she will be there with 3 other Alpha Phis)! Alessandra McDowell is our "Sister of the Day!"

Alessandra is currently our Historian of Alpha Phi, which includes managing and writing the blog, as well as serving on the marketing committee. She is a Sophomore Psychology major with a Pre-Med emphasis and is from San Diego, CA. Earlier this summer, Alessandra travelled to Fiji on a medical mission through Pepperdine IP, which she found to be the most rewarding and amazing experience of her life! Alessandra says, "I believe that those three weeks in the clinic taught me more about compassion, patience, and mutual respect than I ever could have learned at a local U.S. hospital. Not only will those memories always hold a special place in my heart, it also reaffirmed my hope and dream to become a neurosurgeon." :) Alessandra is a seasonal retail associate at Legoland and absolutely loves its family friendly atmosphere! Alessandra has the opportunity to study abroad in Lausanne, Switzerland this upcoming fall and she is excited to immerse herself in all things French! Alessandra has 14 year old identical twin sisters that she adores! She is obsessed with musical theater and her favorites include Wicked and Les Miserables! Alessandra says, "I feel so blessed to study at Pepperdine and I can’t imagine my life anymore without my beautiful sisters in Alpha Phi! Love you all!" :)

Amy Ritzke is our "Sister of the Day!"

Amy is currently our Director of New Member Orientation, so we are all so jealous that she gets to spend so much time with our New Members! Amy is a Junior Sports Medicine major with a Spanish and Applied Math minor, and is Pre-Med. Amy is from Chicago, Illinois. Her summer has consisted of two semesters of Organic Chemistry! Amy studied in London last spring semester and also did the Medical Mission to Fiji Summer of 2010 with our sister Annie! Amy loves Chipotle... especially with her sisters! Amy says, "I'm so excited to get to know all of our new members and get to experience the new member process with them!" Amy is also very excited to expand the family (her little is Shaina)! :)

Karissa is currently our VP of Recruitment and is doing a fabulous job getting ready for our New Members to join us in the fall! She is a Senior International Business major and is in the 5-year MBA program. Karissa is from Westchester, NY and is interning with a shoe production company on 5th Ave in NYC for the summer! She is also interning with the designer Peter Som at Market Week and is a Fashion Specialist at Express! Karissa studied abroad in Shanghai from 2009 to 2010. She is a Pepperdine cheerleader and has been 5 feet tall since the 4th grade! Karissa is looking forward to adding a new pledge class of beautiful, smart, and motivated ladies!

Ashley Rhame is our "Sister of the Day!"

Ashley is a Sophomore Business Administration major from San Diego, CA. This summer she has taken on the biggest project of her planning career and is having a Charity Date Auction for Japan with proceeds going to the American Red Cross. Ashley has recruited Alpha Phis from 10 different schools to be auctioned off at the event. Ashley likes to do kickboxing and karate, and is in LOVE with red velvet fro yo from Yogurtland with cookie dough on top! She loves doing fro yo runs with her sisters! Ashley says, "This summer I have learned the meaning of sisterhood. Bonding with other Alpha Phis from different schools has made me realize that no matter where you are there is always a sister you can count on!" :)

Britt Kidd is our "Sister of the Day!"

Britt is a Junior Telecommunications major with an emphasis in Broadcast Journalism. She is from Thousand Oaks, CA and is currently our Director of Recruitment. This summer she is working full time at Banana Republic. Britt is also a Hospice Volunteer and she most recently served as "Juror #11" in a 2 week criminal case in Ventura, CA! Britt looks forward to visiting her family in Maine for 2 weeks at the end of the summer. Britt was in Switzerland for the spring semester in 2011 with Pepperdine IP! She will be working for The Graphic as the Life and Arts assistant, as well as writing her own weekly column about fitness and well-being in the fall! Rachel and Cindy Peña are our "Sisters of the Day!"

Rachel is a Senior Sociology major from Anaheim, CA. This summer she has been working in Malibu doing technical theater work! All of last year Rachel interned at Camp Kilpatrick, a juvenile probation camp, and she would like to go into criminology after graduation! Last summer, Rachel went abroad to East Africa with the Pepperdine summer program for missionary work and classes. Rachel looks forward to gaining new sisters this upcoming fall semester and forming friendships to last for years to come! :)

Cindy is a Senior Public Relations major from Anaheim, CA. She is currently our Director of Marketing Alpha Phi (MAP)! Cindy is home for the summer, working retail and interning at Shout PR, a fashion PR firm. She is also starting to work weddings which she will be doing a lot more of in the fall! Annie Lee is our "Sister of the Day!"

Annie is a Senior Biology B.S. and Religion Minor, and is originally from Seoul, Korea, but now lives in Seattle, WA. Last year, she held the position of Marshall. This summer, Annie has been doing Ecology research for Dr. Kats at Pepperdine and is now in Washington taking summer classes at the University of Washington. Annie volunteers at the blood bank in Seattle when she's home. She led the Project Serve Domincan Republic medical team last spring and went to Fiji last summer on the medical mission. Annie loves taking kickboxing classes to stay in shape and is learning to play the guitar! Her best friend is sister Stephanie Katsoufis! Annie loves to shop and ride bikes along Venice, and cannot wait to bring her new sisters along!

Angela Kappus is our "Sister of the Day!"

Angela is currently our Director of Parent and Alumni Relations. She is from Indianapolis, IN and is a Sophomore Art and Psychology major with a Non-profit Management minor. This summer she is in London with Danica! Angela is taking classes and interning at Parayhouse School, a school for disabled kids. They absolutely stole her heart and she misses them already! At the moment Angela is in Santorini, Greece for her birthday (which was yesterday)!!! She will be back in London for religion classes and a trip to Israel! Danica Frye is our "Sister of the Day!"

Danica is currently our Director of Member Education and previously held the position of Panhellenic Delegate! This summer she is in London interning with NBC News and taking classes, which works out great since London is her favorite city!!! The internship has been a dream come true for Danica. She has produced for NBC twice, once for the Today Show and once for MSNBC, which is perfect because she wants to be a news producer! She's been having the time of her life so far this summer! She is also traveling to Ireland and Israel in the near future. Danica is from Agoura Hills, CA and is a Senior double major in Broadcast Journalism and Political Science. Danica will be living with two Alpha Phis next year, Haeley and Jessica! What is Danica looking forward to the most when she gets home?? Yogurtland with her sisters, of course! :)

Sisterhood of the Traveling Phis!

This summer, a number of Alpha Phis from our chapter decided to pursue various educational, leadership, and service-oriented opportunities around the world. First off, sophomore Angela Kappus and senior Danica Frye are currently in London for an internship program. Danica is interning as a producer for NBC London, and Angela is working at the Parayhouse School for special needs children. After her internship is complete, Angela will stay in London for another month to participate in the London/Israel religion curriculum. They are pictured below at Windsor, repping the famous "Phi Bear."

Alessandra McDowell, a sophomore, travelled to Fiji for 3 weeks, and served at the Natuvu Creek medical clinic. While there, she was able to observe dozens of surgeries, help teach nutrition lessons and sports education to elementary school children, and travel to nearby islands to explore Fiji’s diverse and tropical culture. This was a truly life-changing experience for her; as a pre-med student, being able to witness and sometimes assist with operations in a third world country was definitely a blessing.

Additionally, our sister Bridget Corson attended the Emerging Leadership Institute (ELI), hosted by Alpha Phi International, at Butler University in Indiana! ELI is a 5-day intensive program in which sisters learn essential leadership skills as well as practical ways to bring these teaching back to their chapter. Thank you for positively representing the Iota Alpha chapter, Bridget! We look forward to your insights.

At the end of April, 20 of our amazing sisters received their diplomas and graduated from Pepperdine University. Each senior was a wonderful addition to the chapter during their time here; we couldn’t have asked for better mentors, friends, and sisters! They all have bright futures ahead of them; in fact, many of our new alumnae have already taken their first steps toward prospective careers - Ashley Pabrazinsky and Jillian Geletka will be working for Target, Mattie Gullatt has a job in Malibu, and Julia Barr will be attending graduate school! This week, the ladies of Alpha Phi decided to show their love for the chapter's graduating seniors by hosting Alpha Phi Senior Week! The first surprise for them was the painting of the rock, which sits right outside of the caf for the whole campus to see, and each of their names was even written on the back to honor them individually. It was so great to see their faces after they realized what the rock said, and for the girls who didn't have class today, a picture of the rock was posted on our Facebook page. Girls have been paired up for the week in order to pamper one senior, doing things like buying them little treats, taking them out to dinner, and just showing them how much they are appreciated. Senior Week will culminate in the Senior Send-Off, which will be held this upcoming Sunday at Pink Taco in Los Angeles.

Alpha Phi Loves GladiATOrs!

Alpha Phis showed a huge amount of support this year for Alpha Tau Omega’s annual philanthropy, GladiATOrs, whose proceeds go to benefitting foundations that are finding a cure for cystic fibrosis. The philanthropy was split up into two main events, the Coffeehouse and the Gladiator Games. Our very own Karissa Vargas sang at the Coffeehouse and rocked it, great job girl! Also, a group of Alpha Phis purchased two of the ATO’s in a date auction for a whopping $900!! In addition, we won the coin jar competition, which was a great accomplishment for us, and we came in second for “Likes” of the ATO Roadshow page! We had three enthusiastic and energetic contestants for the Gladiator Games, a big thank you to Gabby Gurule-Small, Liz Etter, and Liz Peterson for your participation! Also, there was a surprise show of support by Jessica Freitas, one of our sisters who came to Gladiators after just returning home from a year abroad. The girls really banded together this year to show the ATO’s that we were serious about their philanthropy, and we tried to reciprocate since they won at our philanthropy Eat Your Heart Out just a few months prior.

Fun in the Sun at Pi Phi Arrowspike

On a beautiful, sunny Sunday, what are our Alpha Phis doing? Spiking volleyballs, building sandcastles, and cheering our sisters on at Pi Beta Phi’s spring philanthropy, Arrowspike, which donates its proceeds to First Book. Our first opponents were the ladies of Kappa Alpha Theta, then the men of Psi Upsilon, and after a closely matched game against ATO, in which we were the underdogs, our ladies won two out of the three games and moved into the finals against Sig Ep!

Though the men of Sigma Phi Epsilon took the first place title for the fourth year in a row, we were extremely happy and proud to have made it as far as we did, and team captain Meghan Pyle sees a championship win in the not so distant future!

Spring Formal 2011

Formal this spring was held at Bel Air Country Club, where we were served an elegant dinner and soon afterwards hit the dance floor for a night of fun! Of course, beforehand, we had to stop by Malibu Pier and get some group pictures! Many of the Alpha Phis took Sig Eps to our formal, because of the friendships made through Songfest, but even so, all of the fraternities were still represented, creating a diverse, fun, and friendly atmosphere. Each of the girls looked beautiful, as usual, and many agreed that this was our best formal yet!

Mother-Daughter Tea

Mothers of our Alpha Phis from all around the country, and even around the world flew in to join us as we hosted our 3rd Annual Mother-Daughter Tea. The event was held at the Villa Graziado on Pepperdine’s Drescher Graduate Campus, and despite the pouring rain outside, everyone enjoyed themselves while eating a light brunch, playing fun “Getting to Know You” games, and entering different raffles for prizes such as movies, Phi Bears, and more. Upon arriving, each guest also received a special keepsake mug as a sort of party favor and thank you for travelling the long distance to join us, even if only for a short while. For Songfest 2011, Alpha Phi was paired with Sigma Phi Epsilon to once again form the epic Songfest group better known to the Pepperdine community as “SPEAP”. The title of Songfest this year was “All Nature Sings”, and each of the seven Songfest groups competing was required to create an act based on two conflicting forces of nature. So, the theme of our act was “A World Forged by Fire”, a portrayal of the cataclysmic struggle between lava and flowers, but also a reminder that even in the darkest of times, new life on Earth can always be found. We could not have put together such an amazing show without the help of our amazing producers, choreographers, and musical directors. After one of the shows, a judge even told our producers that our act had the caliber of a Broadway musical! A special thank you to Danica Frye, producer, and Rebecca Ellson, choreographer, for all their time, hard work, and passion that they put into Songfest all year long, and making our show the best yet.

Spring Sisterhood Retreat

The weekend following Eat Your Heart Out, we spent time bonding on our spring sisterhood retreat, held this semester on Mount Pali. We hiked, zip lined, and cooked s’mores together; it was a great way to get to know our sisters even better and grow closer as we had to rely on and trust each other in the midst of various ropes courses and other potentially challenging activities. It was great to hear the girls encouraging each other to try new things and take risks…that’s what sisters are for!

Eat Your Heart Out 2011!!!

Our philanthropy, Eat Your Heart Out, was held last February, and it was a huge success, raising nearly $11,000, meaning we raised more than last year’s event! With an attendance of almost 400 people, one hundred percent of the proceeds went directly to the Alpha Phi Foundation, which supports Cardiac Care.

In addition to the shirts, tank tops, and tickets we usually sell, buttons were available for purchase as well, which were a hit, especially among the fraternities. Also, this year the event was catered by Buca Di Beppo, which served delicious Italian pasta and salad. The fraternities each did a skit informing us about cardiac health, and the skit winners were the men of Sigma Phi Epsilon! This year, competition changed for the sororities; rather than an eating contest, the girls participated in a cake-decorating contest, won by Delta Gamma!

The overall winners of Eat Your Heart Out 2011 were the men of Alpha Tau Omega!! Even though they were celebrating victory, they were still gracious enough to stay after the event and help us clean up…thank you boys!

Even though most Alpha Phis go abroad during the school year or over summer, two of our girls, Vicky De La Hunt and Josette Barsano, took the opportunity to travel to India through Pepperdine’s International Programs during winter break! These ladies spent a month in India, traveling to 12 cities while taking a course in the diverse religions present in India’s culture. Josette is studying in Florence, Italy this year, so she just made a quick trip from one continent to the next and didn’t even go home for Christmas break! What world travelers! Scavenger Hunt With Sig Ep

Last week, Alpha Phi had our first mixer of the semester: a photo scavenger hunt with Sigma Phi Epsilon! The teams were given one hour to run around campus taking pictures with different objects like the Stephen Colbert picture in the SAC or the Christopher Columbus statue, and also performing various tasks, a few of which included doing synchronized handstands, painting a boy’s nails, and cutting someone’s hair. Afterwards, we gathered for some s’mores making while the results of the scavenger hunt were tallied. Congrats to Team TEAM on winning first place, and thanks to everyone who joined in on such a fun bonding experience.

This past Tuesday, many Alpha Phis attended the first sisterhood event of the semester: a night of shopping and bonding at JCREW in the nearby Malibu Lumberyard! JCREW was kind enough to give us a discount of at least 20% on all clothing and accessories throughout the store, and they provided treats like mini cupcakes and sparkling water as well. To make the night even better (and the clothes even MORE affordable), five $20 gift cards to JCREW were raffled off! As the spring semester began, we had to say a tearful goodbye to a few of our beautiful sophomores as they embarked for a semester overseas. Britt Kidd is studying abroad in Lausanne, and Amy Ritzke is in London. As you can see, they have already been travelling up a storm! On the flip side, however, we welcomed back Mia Longo from Florence and Meghan Pyle from Heidelberg after a fun-filled semester in Europe! Alpha Phi Wins Coveted Award!

Right before Christmas break, Alpha Phi was honored to win the Fraternal Spirit Award out of all of the fraternities and sororities on campus! What exactly does this mean? Basically, Alpha Phi was voted by the 11 other Greek groups at Pepperdine as the most spirited, or in other words, having the most participation at various philanthropy events, always wearing our letters with pride, and showing our support at basketball games, volleyball games…you name it! A Glowing Mixer

Last Thursday we had a mixer with Alpha Tau Omega and we went mini golfing. This wasn't your usual run of the mill green turf mini golfing; it was glow in the dark indoor mini golfing! Giving Back Through JDRF

Sunday morning after retreat and initiation many of our sisters participated in the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) Walk at Dodgers Stadium. This is the second year we have taken part in this fantastic philanthropic event. The JDRF Walk is of personal importance to our chapter, since we have several sisters who have Type 1 diabetes and we love being able to show our support for them and helping to contribute to finding a cure for this disease. Our team raised over $2500 and we hope we can exceed this amount next year!

Retreat Redondo Style

Continuing the day-long initiation celebration, after the ceremony we left USC and headed to Redondo Beach for our fall sisterhood retreat. After getting lunch, we went to a hotel and played sisterhood games, including writing messages to each other on beach balls and changing the words of popular songs to Alpha Phi-related lyrics. Next we went to a bowling alley, where we had a great time competing with each other and hoping for strikes and spares. We capped off the day with dinner at Buca di Beppo. The sisterhood retreat was a great way to honor our latest sisters and continue the initiation fun!

On Saturday, November 5 the Iota Alpha chapter welcomed eighteen wonderful, classy ladies into Alpha Phi. The evening prior to initiation we held the Court of Ivy in Pepperdine's chapel, which kicked off initiation weekend. The next morning, our sisters at USC welcomed us to their lovely house where we held the initiation ceremony. After initiation everyone celebrated outside, showering our newest sisters with initiation gifts and sharing in their joy. After Founder's Day, we returned to Pepperdine for one of the most anticipated events of the year- Big Little Reveal! All week, the big sisters had been giving secret gifts and notes to their littles leading up to Sunday evening. In keeping with this theme, the bigs all wrapped large boxes so that their littles would come in and "unwrap" them- the biggest and best gift of all!

Once the bigs were revealed everyone headed to Crumbs, a local cupcake shop, in celebration of this joyous event. Everyone was so excited to add their new littles to their Alpha Phi families!

In addition to Spirit Week, Pepperdine also hosted Waves Weekend this week, inviting all students' families and alumni to come and spend the weekend on campus. Keeping with this idea, Alpha Phi hosted a brunch on Saturday morning for all of our members, their families, Iota Alpha chapter alumni, and the women of Delta Tau Omega, which is the local sorority at Pepperdine that became Alpha Phi in the 1990s.

After enjoying a vast array of food, we had the Presents ceremony in which we formally introduce all of our fabulous New Members to all of the guests. Also, we recognized all of the members of Delta Tau Omega, or Deltas, that came to the event. It was wonderful to see the past, present, and future of Alpha Phi all together in one place. Thanks to all of the parents, grandparents, siblings, alumni, and Deltas for coming to this event and making it so special for us!

The week of October 11-16 was Pepperdine's annual Spirit Week and Alpha Phi took the campus by storm! Our team was Scandinavia for the week, which we represented with a Viking theme.

Starting off with a bang, our sister Vicky De La Hunt led us to a first place victory in the Quiz Bowl and we achieved second place in the skit competition. Alpha Phi had a strong showing in the Bake Off and we rocked the Viking theme all week long.

The biggest event of Spirit Week was the Lip Sync competition, a five minute choreographed dance performance, which took place on Friday evening at Blue and Orange Madness. Alpha Phi was paired with Alpha Tau Omega and Delta Gamma for the event, which we had been practicing for all week. The hard work paid off when we took first place for the second year in a row! At Blue and Orange Madness the Spirit Cup King and Queen were announced and our sister Mattie Gullatt was named the Spirit Queen runner up. We could not be prouder of her! Also, thanks to DG and ATO for once again being great partners in the Lip Sync competition!! First the girls went to the Santa Monica, dining at Bubba Gump Shrimp Company on the Santa Monica Pier and hitting up all the shops on the Third Street Promenade. After the girls shopped til they dropped, everyone returned to Malibu and had a fun sleepover at the home of some of our older sisters. They had a barbecue, played games, watched a movie, took advantage of free Malibu Yo, and started the next day with a pancake breakfast. The annual food fight tradition with Sigma Phi Epsilon continued on Saturday at Alumni Park. Our sisters stocked up on cake batter concoctions, syrup, flour, pudding, melted ice cream, and other assorted food items to attack the members of Sig Ep.

Both sides fought intensely and everyone was covered from head to toe. We then walked to the beach to rinse off and were quite the sight to see strolling down PCH.

After all of our hard work throughout recruitment, we are so so happy and proud of our new member class! They are truly a fantastic and amazing group of young women and we cannot wait to see the impact they will have on our chapter here at Pepperdine!

It was such a special night! We had so much fun riding the carousel, decorating cookies, playing Little Sally Walker, and being sisters!! It was the perfect way to welcome the most perfect pledge class to our special sisterhood!

Bid night was so much fun and we cannot wait to get the year started with sisterhood events, socials and mixers!!

And so it begins! Last night was the first night of Open House, kicking off Recruitment 2010! We had such an amazing time getting to meet so many amazing girls and loved getting to spend the time with our sisters! It was such an inspiring night of sisterhood and love, and we can't wait to meet the rest of the awesome girls tonight during the second night of Open House! A-Phi Steps Forward... Twice!

Alpha Phi participated in Step Forward Day on Saturday, serving at the Westside Children's Center in Culver City!

Our girls helped this non profit organization by cleaning all of their classrooms, facilities and playgrounds. And of course we had a little Phi-esta as we cleaned!!

Alpha Phi then served double duty and went down to the Musicbox in Los Angeles to help a nonprofit called Break the Cycle prepare for a charity concert they were hosting that night!

We were the last group back to campus but were so happy to help out twice! Can't wait for next year's Step Forward Day!

A special thank you to our sister Mattie Gullatt for being instrumental in planning the entire event! We are so proud of you and your work with nonprofit and the Pepperdine Volunteer Center! We love you!

Over the weekend, sisters Shelby Doyle, Liz Neville and Lo Formaz spent their Labor Day hiking to the Hollywood Sign! And Shelby even did it while wearing A Phi gear! What an adventurous way to have some extra sisterhood bonding! Now we all want to do this hike after hearing about how much fun you all had!

Coffee Before Convo!

Our sisters met up early before convo this morning to eat delicious muffins made by Lindsay and Rebecca, and drink Starbucks coffee that Stacy brought us! This was such a fun way to get excited for chapel and to meet up as a chapter before going into the Fieldhouse. We can't wait to do this again!

Then we all sat together as a chapter at the front of the Fieldhouse to support our sister Mattie as she spoke at convo about Step Forward Day! We're so proud of all of your hard work you have done for Step Forward Day and can't wait to participate on Saturday!

Orientation Night!

Last night was the first pre-recruitment event, Orientation Night! We had so much fun getting to meet some of the PNMs and hanging out together at our beautiful table in the caf! We can't wait for the next event, Smoothie Night, which will be held in the Fireside Room on Thursday at 9pm!

Mixin' it Up with Sig Ep!

We met up with the men of Sig Ep on Tuesday to have a fun BBQ and volleyball mixer!

We had such a fun time reuniting and relaxing on Lower Dorm Row with the guys.

We even got to see some of our sisters and some of the guys in Sig Ep who are going abroad for the last time before they leave!

With great company, beautiful weather and tons of food, it was an amazing mixer!

And Lindsay grilled some tasty hot dogs!
